About Communicating for Change
Radio Production
CFC produces a wide array of radio programmes
ranging from adverts and news reports to dramas and comedies.
Production is mostly based on qualitative and quantitative
research.
With support from the Rockefeller and Ford
Foundations, CFC produced a 52 part radio drama series called
Ready or
Not on youth – and their unique perceptions of
environment and development issues.
The colourful cast
of characters includes T.J., a student, working part time
as a DJ, and Fortune, who has been expelled from school, and
is idle and non-productive. His younger sister Cynthia, though
stuck in the gap between secondary school and university,
is ambitious, and while street-wise, tries to stay on the
straight and narrow until she can begin her studies in law.
Other youths include Prince who although disabled, will not
let his lack of working legs keep him from getting ahead,
and Lucky, who has the name but not the luck. Simply Sofie,
at age 22, is always saucy, sometimes snobbish, with an offbeat
humour that casts a refreshing light on any issue, and Henry,
the local journalist writes a column, which often gets him
and others in trouble.
These youths and other memorable characters
come together regularly at the Hope Rising Recreational Center,
where they find T.J.'s joint "Master Vibes" an attractive
meeting place. Hope Rising Recreational Center also brings
the world of adults into their lives, some helpful, some annoying.
Joy Seka runs the center, and works tirelessly to ensure that
the youth get the most out of it. Her strength and political
aspirations often put her in conflict with, Barrister Williams,
the Chairperson of the local government. Kaltume Bello provides
a motherly presence as the counsellor that youth know they
can trust, and Captain provides leadership as the coach of
the disabled football team and a frequent youth advocate.
Glimpse the real struggles urban Nigerian
youth face in the experiences that these characters share
when they are given a chance to speak and be heard.
Ready
or Not was produced in English and Hausa
and is being aired by 32 public and private radio stations
in Nigeria. It received “two thumbs up” from Nigeria’s broadcast
community and the National Broadcasting Commission, which
recognizes the series as excellent indigenous material.
